A vault is not a bigger drive. It is a different promise: fewer ways in, nothing readable at rest, and a verified original whenever you need it back.
How is a vault different from a drive?
A drive is optimised for sharing and speed of collaboration. A vault is optimised for containment. It assumes an attacker will eventually get inside something, and makes sure that is not enough.
What belongs in one?
Anything whose loss, theft or exposure would materially harm the organisation or the person who owns it.
Containment beats defence.
Almost every serious breach begins with legitimate access: a credential, a session, an insider, a contractor. Walls do not help when the intruder walks in through the door.
A vault changes the outcome of that moment. If the data at rest is not whole, and no single location holds anything meaningful, then access alone does not produce a readable file.
